In rural areas of Malawi over 20% of those starting to take the HIV medicine, Antiretroviral drugs (ARV), default and stop taking them within 6 months.
This can lead to further progression of the illness, inability to work, and in most cases, death. While the medicine is free, most cannot afford the transportation to the closest health clinic. |
In conjunction with multiple other T!AN programs, we will provide increased access to ARV drugs through multiple avenues.
The only way to help individuals become independent again is to reduce roadblocks to them getting their medication. With this, they will be able to be contributing members of society. |
The nearest health clinic can be hours away by bicycle or local transport. The distance, lost work, time, and cost are all factors stopping villagers from getting their medication.
T!AN will work in partnership with the Malawi Ministry of Health as well as local community health centers to provide Mobile Medicine Clinics. 2-4 times a year we'll provide remote communities access to healthcare in their villages. This'll be done in conjunction with the Stronger Together HIV Community Village Groups. |
T!AN will work within villages to create what is called a "HIV+ Cluster." This is a group of HIV positive individuals who we will facilitate group registration at the nearest health clinic.
By being registered, one representative of the group will be able to go to the health clinic to receive medication for all group members. This allows transportation cost to be shared and greatly increases the likelihood of ARV compliance. |
